Rinascimento in Mostra.

Abstract

Between 1935 and 1940 a project for an "Esposizione Universale" to be held in Rome in 1942 (20th anniversary of the fascist "Marcia su Roma") was conceived and quickly abandoned. At the center of the project, a "Mostra della Civiltà Italiana" would have been organized on a diachronic basis, with strong relevance attributed to the Renaissance. This last Section, whose final asset had been attributed to the direction of Giovanni Gentile, was structured with the collaboration of some famous scholars (Antonio Baldini, Giuseppe Caraci, Armando Sapori) and young researchers cooperating with the Istituto dell’Enciclopedia Italiana (Antonio Geza de Francovich, Federico Chabod, Delio Cantimori). With the beginning of World War II, once the project abandoned, what remains of this Exposition is a rich documentation by the means of which we can now reflect on a very rich period in historiografical debate on Italian and European Renaissance, and more generally on the intellectual and ethical risks of an ideological 'public use' of History.
