Guido Canella ristrutturazione del Palazzo di Giustizia ad Ancona 1975-1989 Dentro un fragile “resto”; Guido Canella: restoration of the Palace of Justice in Ancona, 1975-1989 Inside a fragile "ruin"

Abstract

Appointed for carrying out the restoration of the Palace of Justice in Ancona, Guido Canella inserts, inside a fragile yet tenaciously preserved “ruin”, another architecture, a new measure set within the restored walls of the 19th century palace. On the inside a covered square with urban features overlooked from above by the courtrooms and other judiciary offices. The essay explores, through the filter of the Maestro's coherent design and theoretical research, the events that determined the definition of the delicate intervention of recovery and transformation of a palace reduced to ruins by the earthquake in the historic centre. The essay explores, through the filter of the Maestro's coherent design and theoretical research, the events that determined the definition of the delicate intervention of recovery and transformation of a palace reduced to ruin by the earthquake in the historic centre. It is for this reason that the work undertaken in Ancona is unique and of great interest, since Canella enters into a dialogue with the ancient fabric, however torn, of the city, where architectural structures accumulated side by side uninterruptedly, thus creating a scenario that is linguistically rich, and does so by intervening on an existing building. Canella’s decision to “relinquish” the possibility of constructing a new building, which would have given him a greater opportunity to leave a mark on the city, is perhaps due to the «idea of architecture as a social commitment»6 which places the duty of the architect towards society before any fanciful formal and linguistic “exhibitionism”. The essay is part of a research on the theoretical and design work of Mastri who, starting after World War II, contributed to delineating the identity of Italian architecture.
