This paper identifies the main concepts involved in the study of epigraphy and proposes the use of CIDOC CRM to encode epigraphic concepts and to model the scientific process of investigation related to the study of epigraphy. After analysing the existing CIDOC CRM entities and those provided by the CRMsci and CRMarchaeo extensions, we introduce more specific epigraphic classes to be used as the basis for cre- ating a new extension, CRMepi, which is more responsive to the specific needs of this discipline.
