Modernism is known as an art-for-art-sake literary movement and Rubén Darío, as a prolific poet exempt of political or social engagement. If this is so, how can they fit into the logic of The Lettered City, Ángel Rama‘s posthumous book on the complicity between political power and lettered culture? In this article, this theoretical inquiry will be put to the fore by judging Rama‘s previous views on modernismo (in works such as Rubén Darío y el modernismo and Las máscaras democráticas del modernismo) against those addressed in The Lettered City. The main purpose is to find out if Rama changed his views on Darío or if he preserved a coherent and sustained view of him within the frame of his approaches to culture and society in Latin America.
