Determinación de la tenacidad a fractura del WC mediante la nanoindentación de microvigas preentalladas

Abstract

Este proyecto tiene como principal objetivo determinar la tenacidad a fractura de los granos de carburo de wolframio que se encuentran en una muestra de metal duro (WC-Co 9% en peso). Se ha estudiado esta propiedad mecánica distinguiendo la influencia que tiene la orientación cristalográfica de los granos sobre ésta. Para conseguirlo se han fabricado seis vigas pre-entalladas de dimensiones micrométricas mediante Microscopía de Haz de Iones, Focused Ion Beam (FIB). Se han realizado tres vigas sobre granos de orientación próxima a la basal y otras tres sobre granos próximos a la orientación prismática. Más tarde, las vigas de dimensiones conocidas se han ensayado mecánicamente a flexión mediante la aplicación de fuerza controlada por un nanoindentador. Los resultados obtenidos, son coherentes con la bibliografía anterior que determina la tenacidad de fractura para el WC por otros medios como son la nanoindentación. El valor para KIc obtenido sin diferenciar la orientación de los granos es de 6,6±1,5 MPa·√m. Mientras que distinguiendo los resultados obtenidos según orientación del grano se obtiene un valor de 7,1±0.9 MPa·√m para la orientación basal y 6,1±1,4 MPa·√m para la orientación piramidal. Por lo que se ha podido llegar a la conclusión de que existe una diferencia en las propiedades mecánicas a fractura entre orientaciones cristalográficas. Este proyecto presenta, por tanto, una nueva metodología para el estudio de las propiedades mecánicas del WC incluido dentro de los cermets, que se aleja de los ya ampliamente realizados, estudios de nanoindentación y posterior cálculo por la ecuación de Palmqvist.
