The author extracts from his experience as Francesc Mitjans’ student some of the keys that approach us to the architectural thoughts and the professional practice of one of the most influential architects in the construction of Barcelona during the 1950s and 1960s. The Royal Barcelona Yacht Club building (1958-1962), a small scale project, isolated and apparently far away from the city’s strains is used here for illustrating two essential and permanent issues in Mitjans’ work since his first house in calle Amigó (1941): the first one is that, for Mitjans, every project is always an opportunity to complete or enrich an existing urban space or, if necessary, to invent a new city scenario until then non-existent. The second one has to be with the idea that all of his work refers to his experience with the architecture of the house, to a built environment that produces spaces thought to be lived and enjoyed with comfort and naturalness and whose essence, away from any rhetoric, is never altered in other uses and programs.
