Abstract

This work studies the decarbonization of a cosmetics plant through a case study based on the conceptual design of a multiproduct batch pilot plant. The cosmetics industry, despite being a low energy-intensity subsector, is subject to the same decarbonization and emissions-reduction obligations as the rest of industries, but it usually does not have specific sectoral roadmaps to achieve this decarbonization, especially with regard to Scope 1 and 2 emissions. The main objective is to define a realistic (non-optimized) baseline case of a pilot line capable of producing three representative products, in this case O/W cream, shampoo and toothpaste, with shared equipment and CIP cleanings between campaigns. From the operating sequence, consumptions and key indicators (KPIs) are quantified and the associated emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) are calculated. Finally, improvements aimed at reducing energy and emissions are proposed and evaluated, focused on process and CIP optimization, the reduction of idle times, the electrification of utilities and heat recovery. The results are reported per batch using KPIs and the impact of the measures on energy consumption, emissions and carbon footprint is discussed.
