Abstract

Introduction: The prevailing model today, linear economy is incompatible with long-term environmental sustainability. Recently, a different model, the circular economy, is being promoted, a system based on the application of the 4 Rs: reduce, repair, reuse and recycle. Objectives: In this work we will seek to understand what 4 Rs are, their relationship with the circular economy, how they relate to each other, how they are presented within the optical sector and what initiatives exist to promote them. Methods: Researching information on the 4 Rs, on the circular economy, on the optical sector and its waste, on waste management and on possible current and potentially applicable projects in the future. Results: Compilation of the main initiatives within the optical sector in the areas of the 4 Rs accompanied by an analysis of the viability of each of them. Conclusions: Although the sector has a small volume impact compared to other sectors, their waste is important enough and applying the appropriate initiatives can greatly reduce its impact. There are a wide variety of projects with varying degrees of feasibility, some with significant impact and relative ease of implementation.
