Design of a planar transformer

Abstract

This actual work presents the magnetic design of a center-tapped planar transformer being optimized with PCB (Printed Circuit Board) copper traces. The magnetic component then is implemented in a prototype for a converter with a rated power of 1.2 kW and a working frequency of 250 kHz. The converter that is going to be used is an LLC converter with a minimum input of 442 V and minimum output voltage of 267 V. Simulation to obtain the proper parameters of the transformer as well as circuit simulation are done before implementing the design. In consequence, all the values of needed knowledge are given to adapt the circuit and accomplish the technological specifications. As first step, the obtention of the magnetic parameters is performed based on given requirements and constraints, second, the design of the circuit is done with the final design on the layout and proper validation of the configurations. Thus, a transformer simulation and a circuit simulation are required to obtain an approximation of the values that must be verified experimentally at the specification level. Furthermore, efforts are made to minimize costs and losses, as manufacturing a transformer on a PCB can be cheaper or more expensive than purchasing the component, as the winding is included on the board itself if the required number of layers is sufficient and parallel or series boards are not required. This paper presents the results of the prototype for a DC LLC converter, verifying and comparing the simulation results. The results are discussed, along with all necessary considerations, conclusions of the work done along with future developments needed. These results ultimately demonstrate the proper functioning of the system and the expected magnetic behavior optimized for giving better efficiency and advantages compared with conventional transformers, which has been properly adapted to the rest of the circuit, fulfilling the objectives of this work.
