Abstract

Introduction: Visual health literacy is the ability of people to access, understand, critically judge and apply information related to visual health. It is key to promoting informed decision-making and improving people’s autonomy in managing their visual health. In previous academic work, the first questionnaire has been developed that allows an operational measurement of the level of literacy in visual health of the population, the CASVI. However, it had not yet been assessed in terms of reliability. Objectives: To evaluate the reliability of the CASVI questionnaire. Method: CASVI has been administered to a sample of adult population residing in Catalonia, at two different time periods, with a separation of two weeks (test-retest). Pearson correlation coefficient (r0), intraclass correlation index (ICC) and Cronbach alpha (αC) have been calculated to analyze the reliability and relationship between the items (signal level p<0.05). Results: A total of 52 participants with an average age of 42±17 years have completed both the test and the retest (56% women). Very good results have been obtained: r0= 0,909 (p<0,001), ICC= 0,904 [IC95%, 0,838-0,943], i αC=0,937, indicating a high stability and internal consistency of the questionnaire. In the sample as a whole, the global ASVI index is at a sufficient level (31 in the test and 30 in the retest); 40% of participants do not reach this level. Conclusions: The results confirm that CASVI is a reliable and useful instrument for evaluating visual health literacy in the general population, and that measures should be taken to improve its level.
