Abstract

The growth of electric vehicles (EVs) as a sustainable alternative to internal combustion vehicles has driven the need to develop efficient and adaptable charging infrastructures. However, the increase in electricity demand associated with these charging points can lead to grid congestion issues and an increase in energy costs. In this context, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are presented as a promising solution to optimize the management of contracted power, reduce dependence on the grid and improve energy efficiency. This work focuses on evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of the implementation of BESS systems in EV charging stations, with the main objective of reducing the contracted power and, consequently, operating costs. Using an adaptable simulation model, different scenarios are analysed to determine optimal profitability conditions, considering factors such as EV adoption, battery technology evolution, and possible integration with renewable energy sources.
