Abstract

This work presents an historical journey that descends from a global scale of the city of Barcelona to a specific fragment of it, the residential buildings typology of the Eixample. By going through its original conception to reach the dynamics of inhabiting nowadays. The objective has been to analyze how the inhabitants have appropriated and physically adapted these spaces according to their changing needs. The research shows that, despite the uniformity of the initial typological distribution projected to be occupied by the Barcelona bourgeoisie of the 19th century, the inhabitants have managed to build their own history by creating a hearth-warming home within this pre-established framework. This study investigates in depth the home as a personal and temporal manifestation of the individual, beyond the architectural form. This leads us to reflect on the need for a more human vision of housing, where the user is the one who gives meaning and attributes to space a life that architects are unable to understand. The architect is in charge of projecting and building the house, but it is the inhabitant who makes it a home, and only he can teach us to inhabit it.
