Abstract

With the aim of developing more sustainable solutions compared to traditional composite materials, various composite materials will be designed and their potential will be evaluated. This work resumes the research on composite materials with sustainable components initiated by Pardo M. in his final degree project “The use of sustainable composite materials in aeronautical, energy and automotive applications”. In this work, it’s explored the use of linen fabric as reinforcement for different composite materials with different matrices plant based and recycled origins. The selection of the materials has been after extensive bibliographic research in the field of sustainable composite materials and substitutes for traditional materials. The chosen fabrication technic is hand-layup with vacuum pump assistance, this decision has been made based on the available technologies. The results of the tensile tests indicate that the composite materials of rosin and gum arabic could be promising for their capacities in energy dissipation and sustainability, the material of flax and EPS presents capacity for improvement, but serves to give a second life to recycled materials. The use of materials of plant origin or recycled has given promising results for substitutes of traditional composite materials so we can consider this work as a preamble for the development of more sophisticated composite materials with attractive characteristics at an industrial level for their large-scale adoption.
