Abstract

Water use efficiency in agriculture is a crucial challenge in the face of water scarcity and climate change. In this context, the present work focuses on the experimental characterization of dielectric probes for soil moisture measurement, aiming to evaluate their actual behavior under controlled laboratory conditions and to provide technical criteria for their application in irrigation systems. The study is part of the HYDROSOIL project, which assesses radar-based tools for soil moisture detection using field sensors. The main objectives of the work are to compare the response of three moisture probes (EC-5, Teros 12, and HydraProbe II) in different soil types and to analyze the effect of temperature on their readings. The experimental work was carried out through three tests: a) progressive saturation in sandy and loam-clay textured soils, b) analysis of the non-linear behavior of the HydraProbe sensor, and c) evaluation of thermal influence on the readings. Sensors were connected to a data acquisition system based on Arduino and MATLAB, along with auxiliary tools such as a laboratory oven and various irrigation systems. The results revealed significant differences between probes in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, and response to environmental conditions. The EC-5 showed high surface sensitivity but tended to overestimate water content, while the HydraProbe underestimated values when the soil volume was not fully wetted. The Teros 12 offered intermediate performance. Regarding temperature increase, opposite responses were observed: EC-5 showed an apparent increase in moisture, while Teros 12 showed a decrease. HydraProbe remained stable thanks to its integrated thermal compensation. It is concluded that the choice of sensor should consider not only its technical specifications but also its suitability to soil type and environmental conditions. Specific calibration and knowledge of each probe's influence volume are essential for reliable data interpretation.
