A comparative study is intended to be carried out on two types of composite materials: one of synthetic origin and the other one bio-origin. The aim is to compare the results of tensile tests to determine whether it is possible to replace the synthetic fiber-reinforced composite material with a plant fiber-reinforced alternative in certain industrial sectors. To ensure thorough study and accurate comparisons, all materials will first be studied individually to understand their properties. Once the individual tensile tests have been completed, test specimens will be manufactured and tested using different combinations of epoxy and polylactic acid (PLA) matrices reinforced with carbon fiber and jute fiber. The results are consistent with the works reviewed in the literature. Some of the results obtained during the experimental campaign exhibit unexpected characteristics, which may open new possibilities and applications for plant-based or biodegradable materials. Composite materials composed of thermosetting matrices such as epoxy, reinforced with high-performance fibers like carbon or Kevlar, are widely used in many industries due to their high mechanical performance, and especially if we compare it in terms of specific properties against weight. In the present investigation, it was observed that the composite material made of a PLA matrix reinforced with jute fiber, although showing lower strength compared to traditional composite materials, has a high energy absorption capacity. This provides an advantage over traditional composites in certain applications. This work opens new avenues for further research, as the mechanical resistance characteristics found are not significantly lower than those of traditional composite materials currently on the market. The combination of plant-based and bio-based materials exhibits very interesting properties in terms of energy dissipation, which paves the way for replacing difficult-to-recycle materials with more environmentally sustainable alternatives.
