Sentir per aprendre : arquitectura escolar

Abstract

This Final Degree Project studies the role of the senses in architecture through an analysis of how users’ sensory perception and experience influence their engagement with built spaces, with a particular focus on school architecture. Starting from the premise that contemporary architecture has become overly visual, often neglecting the human and perceptual dimension, the research delves into the concept of multisensory architecture, exploring how sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste can be incorporated into design to enhance users’ quality of life, well-being, and learning. The first part of the project, in an introductory manner, focuses on the analysis of relevant architects and theorists who have reflected on and designed spaces from this sensory perspective, with concrete examples of works and reference texts. In the second phase, the project applies this approach to the design of school spaces, analyzing the evolution of schools throughout history and studying how architecture can influence children’s experience and learning. Through specific cases and the context of Europe and Catalonia, it reflects on the current trend in school design, often repetitive and dehumanized, and proposes alternatives that integrate sensory perception as a central axis of the architectural project. This study aims to provide a critical perspective on the current model and highlight the need to design educational spaces that awaken the senses, foster the relationship between individuals and the built environment, and promote a more comprehensive, stimulating, and human learning experience.
