Abstract

Changes in the morphology of the territory and the high concentration of people and activities in urban centers make these areas vulnerable to the effects of climate change. As a way to mitigate some of these problems, the European Commission has been encouraging the adoption of nature-based solutions, including green roofs. It is known that the use of vegetation on building roofs can contribute to improving sustainability and quality of life in cities, namely, by improving the thermal and acoustic insulation of buildings, dampening flood peaks resulting from intense rain, increasing biodiversity, reducing ambient noise, mitigating the urban heat island effect and retaining atmospheric pollutants. Despite the described potential underlying these solutions, there is still little dissemination of them in Portugal, largely due to the difficulty in knowing, in real conditions, the behavior of these solutions and the real benefits they provide. Therefore, the present work focuses on monitoring the behavior of the green roof installed in Coimbra – Itecons building, with an area of around 150 m2, particularly with regard to thermal performance and the possible advantages that the addition of a layer of insulation cork board (ICB) can offer in this context. Through temperature measurements using thermocouples located in different layers of the green roof system, it was possible to analyze the thermal profile in summer conditions, both in dry conditions and in the presence of rain. It was concluded that both systems, with and without ICB, provide significant and similar thermal insulation to the building, but, in the presence of water, this thermal benefit is reduced, due to the increase in the thermal conductivity of the insulation cork board and the substrate.
