3D printer design

Abstract

The 3D Printer Design authored by I.D. Omodolor Omodia, B. Livingston and E. Foissaed, the (3DB) during the European Project semester (EPS) spring 2024, outlined the project’s context focused on redesigning a Tripteron and Cartesian 3D printers at the EniOne lab in the L’École Nationale d’Ingénieurs de Tarbes (ENIT) in France. Students from previous semesters have developed 3D printers for the university over several EPS projects. There have been three distinct types of kinematics used for these 3D printers in the EniOne lab: Delta, Tripteron and Cartesian. During this semester (Spring of 2024), 3dB has worked on Tripteron and Cartesian 3d printer. This semester, instead of building a new machine from scratch, 3dB will focus on redesigning two existing machines in the lab for future projects within the university. The objectives of the project included reducing the displacement of the Tripteron 3d printer and restoring functionality to the Cartesian 3d printer. Stakeholders included ENIT, technical supervisors, project management and end users. The project required maintaining original kinematics of the printers and adhering to a budget while making use of Onshape CAD software and ensuring user guides for the 3D printers. The project established limit such as budget constrains and excluded tasks like complete vibration elimination for the Tripteron 3d printer. The work breakdown structure was divided into theoretical and physical prototypes for each printer, including management EPS documentation. The milestones and Gantt chart for the project are outlined to track progress effectively. The focus is on designing a new arm for the Tripteron 3d printer addressing challenges related to torsion, flexion and stress on achieving accuracy and functionality of printing capabilities and tidying up the wiring for the Cartesian 3d. Overall, the project aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the task, deliverables milestones, risk management strategies and technical solutions for designing Tripteron and Cartesian 3d printers. The detailed analysis and design considerations highlight the project’s systematic approach to address challenges and optimise the performance of the 3d printers.
