Abstract

This project deals with the study and manufacture of polymeric materials using GTR (tire) waste in different quantities and virgin NR, NBR and SBR elastomers using Brabender and roller mixers and a hot plate press. Every year the number of tires that are not recycled grows and their use is completely lost, and the accumulation of tires in landfills leads to soil, water, and air pollution. As they become practically indestructible over time due to their non-biodegradable nature and their resistance to severe climatic and mechanical conditions. In this way, this study has the function of incorporating this recycled tire, in different contents, into the virgin tire samples with the aim of observing if their properties improve or worsen. This characterization process has been carried out using different analysis methods such as hardness, density, swelling and structural methods such as FTIR and SEM as well as a process of forced thermal degradation with the aim of compare the results of the different types of samples prepared. All the modified samples, whether with the addition of GTR or thermo-oxidized, present different results to the virgin samples with a clear tendency towards a stiffer material due to the chain crossing experienced. All the material used has been provided by the university as well as the facilities to carry out the samples and the different analyses.
