Abstract

This work aims to meet and evaluate the most important indicators and challenges of the management of Urban Solid Waste (RSU) in the European Union, Spain and Catalonia for the near future. The work is organized into four parts. The first is an introduction to urban solid waste and its management. This section also discusses the state data on their management and compares at Catalan, state and European level, here the objectives of the European Union are introduced. The second part is an analysis of the data in the first part and a brief explanation of the economic instruments as a measure to increase recycling. The third part is a modelling of the evolution of the generation, selective collection and disposal of waste in controlled deposit in the territory of Catalonia until 2030. The level of achievement of the objectives in respect of those set by the EU described in the first part is also analysed. The fourth part is a set of proposals to achieve EU objects in Catalonia in response to the conclusions of the third part.
