This project focuses on an extensive examination of the aerodynamic effects of Gurney Flaps with varying heights (4, 5, 6, and 7 mm) and three slot configurations (no slot, 0.8 mm slot, and 1.6 mm slot), encompassing a total of 12 simulations. This will be done through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). By exploring the aerodynamic behavior of the various Gurney Flaps, we will be able to assess the extent to which our objectives are me t, the impact of height and slot variations on aerodynamic performance. Our hypothesis suggests that as we increase the height of the Gurney Flap, there will be a concurrent increase in aerodynamic drag. However, we anticipate that this drag will be reduced with the addition of the two differently sized slots. The project’s methodology includes the 3D design of the twelve models, using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software named CATIA V5. CFD simulations and the post processing of the results to obtain drag and lift coefficients are done using Ansys Student Software. The theoretical segment encompasses the governing equations of fluid dynamics, aerodynamic forces and moments, and the variation in drag and lift. The overarching goal of the project lies in its potential to discern the impact of varying heights and slots, aiming to increase downforce without excessively compromising drag. Consequently, this investigation would have the potential to contribute improvements to both competitive racing and actual production vehicles. In conclusion, this project aspires to comprehensively investigate the aerodynamic behavior of Gurney Flaps with various configurations, providing valuable insights into their efficiency and effectiveness.
