Abstract

With this prototyping project, the aim is to experience firsthand the different stages involved in designing a component. In this case, the goal was to develop a swingarm for a motorcycle intended for competition use, in order to understand what needs to be taken into account when creating an efficient and cost-effective piece. As background, work has been done on the geometry of a circuit motorcycle from the 80s and it was desired to create a prototype of a single-arm type that could be attached to the model, replacing the original component effectively while reducing its weight. After extensive research on the structure of a motorcycle and its dynamic behavior, the geometry of the motorcycle was digitized to have a framework in a CAD program, allowing us to define the general measurements our piece should have. Next, after an exhaustive study of materials and manufacturing processes, it was decided to manufacture the component through magnesium casting, assuming the associated risks. The modeling of the component was carried out in parallel with finite element simulation in order to optimize the critical stress areas. Regarding the manufacturing process, the advantageous combination of sand casting and 3D printing was chosen, a feasible method for short series or unit production of parts with complex geometries, as in our case. Finally, various possibilities were studied to counteract the main problem with magnesium alloys, corrosion. After thorough information research, it was considered that the combination of a T6 heat treatment with the subsequent application of a plasma oxidation surface treatment is one of the most effective options for mitigating the effects of corrosion, specifically in the magnesium alloy used. In this way, a project has been successfully developed, resulting in a tangible prototype of a single-arm swingarm with a significant weight reduction compared to the original swingarm, and with potential for further development. Additionally, I have been able to reinforce the foundations obtained in my studies and make progress autonomously throughout the work.
