Abstract

In this Master's thesis, an evaluation of the state of the existing ventilation in the El Garrofer school was carried out. The feasibility of introducing natural ventilation through window openings and other passive strategies such as the addition of a solar chimney or a earth-air tunnel was analyzed. The aim is to improve indoor air quality and thermal comfort in the school without increasing energy consumption. The methodology employed consisted of using computer modelling and simulation software to calculate air flow, temperature, and air renewal in different areas of the school. The performance of existing ventilation systems and their coupling with natural ventilation was assessed. The wind behavior both outside and inside the building was also analyzed. Different climatic conditions were considered in a representative section and the results were compared with and without the implementation of the natural ventilation strategies. The findings revealed that the current state of the ventilation scheme in the school can be significantly improved in terms of air renewal without impacting energy demand. In addition, it was observed that the implementation of a solar chimney considerably improves air circulation, reducing indoor renovation times and improving the feeling of comfort. It came to light that a basic version of the Canadian well does not seem to be suitable for the project, and its sizing would have to be refined before it could be definitively ruled out. To conclude, this study highlights the importance of assessing the current state of ventilation in schools and considering natural ventilation strategies to improve air quality and thermal comfort. This study can serve as a reference for future architectural projects. These strategies not only promote a healthy and comfortable environment, but also contribute to energy efficiency and sustainability in an educational environment.
