La superconductividad podría madurar tecnológicamente en las plantas navales de generación eléctrica

Abstract

La superconductividad, podría ser una tecnología útil en plantas navales de generación eléctrica en barcos propulsados por Gas Natural Licuado (GNL). La criogenia necesaria para los sistemas de superconductividad de alta temperatura, ya está disponible en esos barcos y su instalación podría proporcionar beneficios en términos de eficiencia energética, mejoras en la operación, estabilidad, reducción de emisiones y ahorro de costos. La planta de generación eléctrica es un lugar estratégico para comenzar la instalación de superconductores, especialmente si la propulsión es eléctrica convencional. Los nuevos barcos híbridos GNL-Eléctricos, pueden transferir la función del volante de inercia del motor térmico que consume gas, al alternador acoplado a el, para que la electricidad gestione las oscilaciones de par motor y resistente de los propulsores de manera más eficiente. Esta estructura es similar a la de las plantas de generación eléctrica convencionales, pero con un alternador más grande, capaz de manejar las puntas de consumo de corriente efímeras, que se producen en los arranques de los propulsores eléctricos o en condiciones climáticas adversas. Cada grupo electrógeno sincronizado a través de los alternadores, pasa exclusivamente a operar solo en los puntos de máximo rendimiento o puede ser desconectado de la planta de generación, dejando de consumir combustible.
