Partos autogestionados

Partos autogestionados

Abstract

Freebirthing or having an unassisted birth is defined for this study as a practice whereby women intentionally give birth without healthcare professionals present, in countries where there are medical facilities available to assist them. Freebirth appeared with the medicalisation of childbirth in 20th century in Western countries. The first empirical source related to freebirth arises from the nursing research tradition in 1973. Since the beginning, freebirth is associated with previous trauma and women’s necessity to retain control in their birthing experiences. Despite being a minority practice, freebirth is deemed to be rising up. Freebirth’s clandestine nature and the stigma associated do not promote the research. Up to now, it is not possible to stablish relationships between freebirth and concepts like safety or risk. Objectives: To explore and characterise freebirth reality in Spain, to identify women's profiles and motivations to freebirth and to describe their perception of the professional support they receive when announcing their decision to freebirth. Method: Qualitative study through interpretative hermeneutic phenomenology. Main data collection is carried out by focal groups. Relevance: This study intends to bring to light the stigmatised minority of freebirthing women. Being able to identify women's necessities and motivations to freebirth in Spain may help other women who intend to do so. It may help as well women who decide to give birth inside the system and have not ever heard about freebirthing. In addition, it may be of profit to birth professionals who do not know about freebirth or fear it.
