Abstract

Supported in the search for solutions that manage to mitigate the climate change scenario and the environmental impacts of civil construction, wood is presented as an important alternative mainly due to its ability to absorb and fix CO2 during its useful life. In addition, based on the latest technological advances, technical wood products have allowed the construction of structural systems for high-rise buildings, becoming the only material of renewable origin with high structural performance. For this reason, in recent years, various countries around the world have explored the potential of wood in their buildings, however, in Brazil traditional construction still prevails and technical wood is limited to the private building sector. This research suggests that the climate mitigation potential of massive wood construction in Brazil could be accelerated through the public sector and the insertion of technical wood products, in a progressive and punctual manner, in the structures of public schools in the State. from São Paulo. This is quantified from the analysis of the environmental impact of hybrid combinations in order to analyze the most suitable solution, in terms of equivalent CO2 emissions. In fact, it has been proven that using technical wood elements, together with conventional Brazilian construction materials – concrete and steel – can contribute to the reduction of almost 40% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the public construction sector.
