Abstract

This project optimizes a cast wheel to forged using finite element analysis (FEA) numerical calculation programs. During the project, a real competition wheel model will be studied and compared with the same optimized model. The two main goals of the project are to understand the difference between a cast and forged rim, and on the other hand, to visualize and appreciate the differences in behaviour of each rim using 3D computational calculation. The project begins with a theoretical framework that explains the basics of tires, showing the most relevant principles and concepts involved in the design of a tire. Then, the designs to be worked on, made with the SolidWorks and SolidEdge CAD programs, are presented. Due to the confidentiality of the modelling, the Speedline design has been done based on pictures and sketches. On the other hand, we have a small section of theoretical calculations that will be used later for the simulations. Next, the results of the FEA simulations are presented, performed with the ANSYS Workbench software. Finally, the results obtained from a dynamic analysis are analyzed in which the stresses and displacements resulting in each test are compared for both models. With these results, it is possible to obtain the conclusions of the work, being able to quantify them and therefore achieving the goals set at the beginning of the project.
