Impacto ambiental de las criptomonedas

Abstract

La creciente popularidad de las criptomonedas me ha hecho preguntarme si de verdad pueden ser una alternativa a las monedas convencionales desde una perspectiva ambiental. Este trabajo da contexto sobre las criptomonedas y las tecnologías usadas para crearlas y comerciarlas para posteriormente entrar en una revisión de la literatura dedicada al impacto ambiental y la sostenibilidad energética producido por estas. Los resultados son mostrados como consumo de energía eléctrica y emisiones de CO₂, este consumo de energía viene dado mayormente por la operación de minar. Determinamos que son un peligro para el desarrollo sostenible, que de seguir creciendo podrían convertirse en una gran amenaza para el medioambiente.

La creixent popularitat de les criptomonedes m'ha fet preguntar-me si de veritat poden ser una alternativa a les monedes convencionals des d'una perspectiva ambiental. Aquest treball dona context sobre les criptomonedes i les tecnologies fetes servir per crear-les i comerciar-les per posteriorment fer en una revisió de la literatura dedicada a l'impacte ambiental i la sostenibilitat energètica produït per aquestes. Els resultats són mostrats com consum d'energia elèctrica i emissions de CO₂, aquest consum ve donat majorment per l'operació de minar. Determinem que són un perill per al desenvolupament sostenible, que de continuar creixent podrien arribar a convertir-se en una gran amenaça per al medi ambient.

The growing popularity of cryptocurrencies has made me wonder if they can really be an alternative to conventional currencies from an environmental perspective. This work gives context to cryptocurrencies and the technologies used to create and trade them to later enter into a review of the literature dedicated to the environmental impact and energy sustainability produced by them. The results are shown as electricity consumption and CO₂ emissions, this energy consumption is mostly given by the mining operation. We determine that they are a danger to sustainable development, if they continue to grow, could become a major threat to the environment.
