Smart clothes for construction site safety

Abstract

This paper is to summarise the EPS project, realised by the SecureCo team on the topic of „Smart clothes for construction site safety”. Each stage of work is also documented in this report, as well as the achievements and conclusions, summarised with the possible improvements of the solution for the future. Agile methodology was used to structure the work, while the mix of Design Thinking and Problem Based Learning was applied to find the best solution to the given problem. The results of the research conducted determined the problem, namely – detection and prevention of falling at construction sites. Profound analysis of possible solutions resulted in the creation of an intelligent vest capable of detecting a worker’s fall and communicating it to the supervisor and the emergency. It is also capable of detecting if the worker wears any kind of Personal Protective Equipment, that presence is required. This function of the system is handled by the wireless radio communication on the frequency of 433MHz. Hardware design is a combination of sensors, Arduino microcontrollers and personalized 3D-printed covers, attached to the vest of the construction site worker. The technical solution of the project, opens a new stage in the development of Personal Protection Equipment. The solution aims to provide more safety, decrease the deaths rate (caused by falling from heights) and increase the safety culture among the construction site workers.
