Abstract

This work claims to improve the teaching given in various subjects in the Materials Science area. The improvement is to be carried out with the creation of a Virtual Laboratory of Materials Science and Engineering, which helps and complements the understanding of the training activities that are carried out. CIMNE, the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering, has developed a prototype of the virtual laboratory for Strength of Materials (RdM). This laboratory allows to analyze the behavior of specimens in compression and tensile and Brazilian tests in elastic regime and at break. The methodology employed to evaluate the breakage of concrete parts and structures and its application to three typical tests in material resistance laboratories is described. The results of the trials are compared and analyzed. This work analyzes the detected requirements of scientific-technical teachings, on the design and functionality of a Virtual Laboratory. It pretends to serve as a complement to experimental teaching in the classroom laboratory. The work details the structure of the laboratory, the analysis performed, the collection of data on different physical variables, the results obtained viewed in a three-dimensional environment and the discussion of said results.
