Girona ordinària

Girona ordinària

Abstract

We live in a built environment. Everybody is necessarily in contact with architecture on a daily basis. Residential buildings, hotels, squares, shops, car parks, streets, schools, terraces and the long etcetera that make up cities. Not all of this architecture is the example that appears in magazines. In fact, this is only a very small part of the whole. Therefore, what is all the other? Maybe we can call the rst one Architecture, while the one we are trying to de ne here is architecture... What is its value? There is the word “ordinary architecture”. Many authors throughout history, architects, theoreticians or artists have found it necessary in one way or another to talk about this type of constructions, the ones that will never be recognised as architecture and that could be included within the concept of ordinary. The work presented below focuses exclusively on this type of architecture, the ordinary, and a speci c scenario has been chosen to study it: the city of Girona. The research will attempt to document “the ordinary Girona” from four points of view of di erent elds of architecture. Each one will be analysed on the basis of a speci c reference in the history of architectural theory. The aim is to recognise the elements that de ne the most banal within Girona, to look at them from other eyes (or, simply, to look at them) and to discuss their value through the analytical eye and the critical gaze.
