Barbican: espais de contrast i complexitat

Abstract

The big metropolis we have inherited tend to keep increasing their density by offering more functional and less social buildings, in order to house the largest number of people with the highest economic return. Generally speaking, these premises imply a reduction in the variety of spaces architecture can provide on the way from the private to public spaces, in other words, from home to the street. This research aims to reflect once again on the discussion about the importance these in-between spaces have in such an individualistic society as the present one, since they stimulate the contact of people who do not necessarily share the same private space. This discussion is made by the study of the Barbican, a large housing estate in London, that began in the 50s, where some of the CIAM and Team X theories related to inhabiting cities were applied. The following analysis of the Barbican is focused on its complex system of public and community spaces and seeks to identify the project decisions that have contributed to its success. While other contemporary housing projects - such as the Robin Hood Gardens - have failed, the Barbican still maintains a strong community spirit.
