Hyperloop frente al sector aeronáutico

Hyperloop frente al sector aeronáutico

Abstract

This document analyses the viability of construction of the Hyperloop (transport mode which uses the vacuum to cancel the atmospheric drag so it can reach transonic velocities). Taking into account that the aircraft is the pioneer transport mode in medium and long distances nowadays, a comparative with the aeronautical sector has been done. The Hyperloop is currently being developed; it has been designed and there are some companies doing tests, but they are not the definitive ones. To do the study, the KPIs of both the Hyperloop and aircraft have been evaluated. Following the route between Los Angeles and San Francisco described in Hyperloop Alpha, five different routes have been designed. It has been computed the cost of the infrastructure of the proposed transport network (also with the information given in Hyperloop Alpha). The cost per passenger has been also computed, taking into account the amortization of the investment and other operational costs. Finally, the sale price of the tickets has been estimated. On the other hand, from the annual accounts report of some airlines, the cost of operating the same transport network with an aircraft has been computed. In the end, the safety and the environmental impact of both transport modes have been analysed. It has been concluded that, the construction of the Hyperloop is unprofitable due to its high construction cost. It has been proposed the use of electric airplanes and, for larger routes, non-polluting supersonic aircraft. It has been considered that the Hyperloop is an attractive mode of transport due to passengers using it could save even hours during their travels and they would not contribute to the greenhouse effect. However, with so large price of the tickets, generate demand would be practically impossible.
