Función visual del pigmento macular

Abstract

La importància de la visió cada vegada és més gran, una de les raons més importants és perquè l'esperança de vida ha pujat en els últims anys, és per aquest motiu que cada vegada s'investiga més sobre les patologies oculars (la degeneració macular, les cataractes, entre altres), i com les podem combatre, o almenys, poder mantenir- les estables. En el cas de la retina, s'està investigant la funció que exerceix el pigment macular, el seu color groc propi de la màcula lútea és conseqüència de l'acumulació selectiva de pigments xantófils en els fotorreceptors de la retina central. Actualment les hipòtesis que es tenen sobre les funcions del pigment macular, es basen principalment: a) protecció, ja que l'activitat antioxidant dels carotenoides que constitueixen el pigment macular protegeixen la retina enfront de lesions fotooxidativas; b) qualitat d'imatge, absorbeixen selectivament la llum de longituds d'ona curta abans que arribi als fotoreceptors, amb la qual cosa, atenua els efectes de l'aberració cromàtica i la dispersió de la llum. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és descriure i valorar els estudis actuals publicats que s'interessen per la contribució del pigment macular en el rendiment i experiència visual.
