Abstract

Los dos vocablos que forman la palabra compuesta que expresa el concepto de este sistema constructivo poseen un significado tradicional que, en el caso del "Muro" representa una barrera firme y sólida que puede interceptar el paso de la gente, luz, lluvia..., es decir, con carácter permanente. Por el contrario "Cortina" indica una sutilidad, una flexibilidad por esta misma barrera, que ha de servir también para la defensa de los agentes exteriores. La concepción de los edificios sobre la base de una separación funcional y orgánica entre la estructura portante y la piel de recubrimiento de la fachada sale de la creatividad de maestros como Gropius, Mies Van der Rohe y Le Corbusier, y estimulada por los nuevos materiales que la tecnología aporta. La liberación definitiva de la piel del edificio, de la misión histórica de pared portante, permite el desarrollo del concepto de obertura o gran ventanal corrido en toda la longitud planta por planta, y el concepto de obertura global en toda su anchura y altura que la arquitectura contemporánea requiere y que la tecnología actual proporciona.
