Abstract

En el presente trabajo y, dado el auge que está adquiriendo la ortoqueratología, se ha realizado una revisión bibliográfica de los estudios publicados en los últimos 16 años, relacionados con el tema, de los que se han seleccionado un total de 108. Se han analizado las ventajas e inconvenientes que el uso de las lentes Orto-K aportan a la visión y a las estructuras oculares implicadas en este tipo de terapia. Así mismo, se han analizado las posibles ventajas del uso de la ortoqueratología frente a otras terapias correctoras o compensadoras de la miopía como, el uso de gafas, lentes RPG, lentes hidrofílicas o, fármacos tipo atropina. En general, se acepta que las lentes Orto-K funcionan mejor que las terapias anteriormente citadas, a la hora de reducir y/o retrasar la miopía, especialmente en niños. No obstante, también presentan inconvenientes, ya que modifican el espesor del epitelio corneal, así como la morfología y la tasa de proliferación celular. Estos cambios pueden alterar la función protectora y defensiva del epitelio, facilitando la invasión de microorganismos patógenos como Pseudomonas aeruginosa o Acanthamoeba. En general se concluye que, el uso de este tipo de lentes es ventajoso para la corrección temporal de la miopía y para retrasar su aumento, pero se insiste en la importancia de llevar un riguroso control con la higiene y mantenimiento de las mismas. Así mismo, se insiste en la necesidad de realizar revisiones periódicas de los pacientes, a fin de poder establecer diagnósticos precoces de posibles keratitis microbianas.
