Abstract

The purpose of this project is to use electrodes with textile technology to measure an electrocardiogram (ECG) signal during physical activity. During intense exercise, changes in the heart rate (it is increased) and morphology of the ECG signal occur. Textile electrodes can be the best adapted to the surface of the body and facilitate movement during exercise. Furthermore, easily integrate on clothing. As this type of electrodes are not very well characterized in moving situations, the project main goals have been: 1- Study those areas of the torso where there are less artefacts of movement. Three areas where the ECG is good have been discovered. On the right and left side at the height of the breastbone. Under the chest and above the diaphragm. And between the upper chest and under the collarbone. 2- Characterize the electrode-skin interface from the point of view of noise and artefacts. The most suitable electrode complies with noise regulations when a conductive gel is applied. 3- Design of an easy to fit electrode positioning system (lycra t-shirt). The electrode has been sewn to the jersey and a rivet has been fixed to place the cable.

In the last year there has been an increase in the use of wearable sensors for study of cardiac and physical activity during the day in patients general population. However, in long term recording the characteristics of the electrodes (impedance and noise) can affect the quality of the signals. Therefore, is very important to characterize their properties and to select the best placement point for record the signals with the minimal artifacts.
