Abstract

Water is a scarce, natural resource indispensable for human life and environmental sustainability. It has been affected in recent years by the high use of pharmaceuticals and personal care products, amongst other chemicals. It has been documented how these compounds both access the aquatic environment, primarily through effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and their potential for bioaccumulation and ecotoxicity to the environment. The reuse of wastewater has become very important due to the higher demand of water resources, especially for the irrigation and the recharge of aquifers. A complementary tertiary treatment is necessary to adapt the quality of the regenerated waters for their intended use. This master's project has been carried out within the framework of the JPI project financed by the European Commission and the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Enterprise and Competitiveness, ACWAPUR (Accelerated Water Purification During Artificial Recharge of Aquifers - a Tool to Restore Drinking Water Resources). The main objective of this project is to develop innovative tools and techniques to restore the quality of water resources for the recharge of aquifers. Firstly, the thesis aims to determine the presence of anthropogenic chemical residues derived from the consumption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in wastewater. Secondly, it aims to provide an overview of the performance of the WWTP, where the study was undertaken, and the quality of the processes used in wastewater treatment and elimination of organic pollutants.
