Abstract

I nostri antenati continuano a vivere dentro di noi grazie a una frazione dei loro caratteri contenuti nei geni che formano il genoma delle nostre cellule. Oggi cominciamo a comprendere nei dettagli i meccanismi molecolari che consentono la trasmissione di questa straordinaria eredità che le nostre cellule germinali passano ai nostri figli al momento della fecondazione e che, nelle successive 38 settimane, presiedono allo sviluppo di un nuovo individuo. Questo è in sostanza il contenuto dell'Embriologia e quello che si è cercato di spiegare in questo breve compendio. Se non bastasse l'attrattiva di questi argomenti a rendere l'Embriologia attraente per gli studenti che la trovano fra le loro materie di studio, lo sviluppo delle tecniche di fecondazione assistita, di terapie geniche sull'embrione, di clonazione e di produzione di cellule staminali embrionali dovrebbe essere di maggior stimolo per lo studio di questa affascinante disciplina. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
