The aim of the project is to retrofit a 3-axis CNC milling machine from the late 80’s with a 5-axis head, a new controller, reducing the noise and the vibrations produced by the machine to achieve a healthy work and educational environment. At the same time, the purpose is to study the CNC milling machine within the marc of European Directives and Standards to improve the safety features and ensure the safe and proper work. The methodology used on the present thesis is the Concept Development Process adapted from Ulrich & Eppinger (2008) [5]. During the development process, the collected data is investigated and analysed before the final result is presented. When a concept design is ready, different companies specialised in each field are contacted. By exposing them the problem and the solution developed in previous steps of the present thesis, the concept is developed. Then the next step is to compare the different offers and choose the one that fits better with the initial requirements. The result of this project will be a particular solution applied to the second hand machining centre that will be incorporated soon to the new A-huset workshop.
