Metamateriales en microondas y antenas

Abstract

Desde la década de los '80 una gran variedad de materiales artificiales (no existentes en la naturaleza) son intensivamente estudiados por sus inusitadas y sorprendentes propiedades electromagnéticas (como partes reales de permitividad eléctrica y permeabilidad magnética efectivas negativas, refracciones anómalas, no causalidad e inversión del desplazamiento Doppler, entre otras). Las investigaciones realizadas en algunos de ellos han conducido ya a nuevos diseños de antenas. En otros, con propiedades aún más sorprendentes y controvertidas, las investigaciones se encuentran todavía en un estadio incipiente y tan sólo auguran prometedores desarrollos que revolucionarán el mundo de las microondas y las antenas. En este articulo se describirá escuetamente la diversidad de materiales artificiales objeto de estudio en ingeniería de microondas y en antenas, algunas de sus propiedades (tanto las verificadas experimentalmente como las teóricas) y sus potenciales aplicaciones para la fabricación de dispositivos. También se describirán las actividades que se están desarrollando en este campo en el Departament de Teoria del Senyal i Comunicacions de la Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya.
