Abstract

To prevent deposition of solid soil on fabrics during washing, antiredeposition agents are used in the detergent formulations which are adsorbed on the surface of fabrics and of soil. One of these products is hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) which -in this study- has been put in contact with mixtures of anionic and non-ionic surfactants and carbon black to study firstly the surface density charge of these particles and, then, the mechanisms of actions in the soil antiredeposition. The double electric layer of the carbon black particles was characterized by the microelectrophoresis technique of HPMC under the influence of the concentration of the DBSS anionic and Triton X-100 non-ionic surfactants. The surface potential and the surface density charge were calculated from Gouy-Chapman theory.
