Abstract

The molecular weight of the undissolved fractions resulting from the differential solubility test of a filament yarn of polyamide 6 in phenol/isopropanol mixtures (Ph/2POH) of different compositions was determined by viscosimetry and their crystallinity was determined by DSC. The molecular weight of the dissolved fraction in each test was also determined. This allowed the changes in differential solubility of the polyamide 6 fibres according to temperature to be interpreted. The results obtained show that the molecular weight of the undissolved and dissolved fractions in the differential solubility test increases with the percentage of material dissolved, as a result of the increased phenol content of the Ph/2POH mixture. The enthalpy of fusion/crystallinity also increases with the molecular weight of the insoluble fraction.
