Abstract

Deliverable-based regular assessment of learning holds promise but hides pitfalls. As an example, the product (a deliverable) may be emphasized over the process (the learning itself). This work explores a reflection-based self-assessment scheme aimed at promoting the student’s sense of responsibility where the result of a summative self-assessment is subject to a subsequent validation test. Although still limited, the evidence suggests that a consistent application of this mechanism would lead to good results. Furthermore, this combination of self-assessment plus a validation test might allow detecting students with different needs and, consequently, better attention to diversity. We believe the idea is promising and can be improved in the coming years.
