Abstract

Abstract Background: The effects of serious events and disasters affect millions of people worldwide every year. The changed global security situation has contributed to the review and development of Sweden's emergency planning. Health care has an essential role in the country's preparedness and the demands on health care increase during serious events and disasters. Anesthetist nurses have an important task in maintaining patients' vital functions, safeguarding patient safety and conducting quality development and quality improvement. Anesthetist nurses are also expected to be well versed in the disaster plan and must be able to act according to it in the event of serious events and disasters. Previous research shows that nurses experience inadequate preparedness and lack of knowledge in disaster planning. Research on nurse anesthetists experience of preparedness is relatively unexplored. Aim: The purpose was to describe anesthesia nurses' experiences of preparedness for a serious event or disaster. Method: A qualitative interview study was conducted with ten semi-structured interviews. Nurse anesthetists working at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden were interviewed during the spring of 2024. Data analysis was conducted using Graneheim and Lundman's content analysis with an inductive approach. Results: Three categories with ten subcategories were formulated during the data analysis, which are presented in the results; Confidence in being able to rely on previous experience, which in turn resulted in three subcategories, The profession's competence and self-confidence, with two subcategories and Prerequisites to function in one's profession, with five subcategories. A total of ten subcategories were formed. Conclusion: The nurse anesthetists experienced a good basic preparedness and a sense of duty to act during a serious event or disaster, but they are requesting clear guidelines and simulation exercises to increase preparedness. Despite a lack of knowledge about organisation's disaster plan, they felt that their previous competence strengthened their preparedness. Key words: Nurse anesthetist, preparedness, serious event, disaster, safe care,

Anestesisjuksköterskor verksamma inom Sahlgrenska Universitetssjukhus i Sverige intervjuades under våren 2024.
