Desde que el clientelismo se constituyera en objeto de estudio para los antropólogos y más tarde para los científicos de la política, se han ido transformando las definiciones y las interpretaciones sobre este fenómeno de forma apreciable. El mismo concepto ha sido tan maleable y flexible que se ha utilizado para describir diferentes prácticas que no siempre han respondido a la esencia de la relación de clientela.
