The research was aimed at the creation of a 3D GIS platform for virtual restoration that could integrate the various software necessary for such processing into a single system and, at the same time, contain all the information obtained and produced during the intervention in order to allow a historical-artistic understanding of the work and a critical evaluation of the final result. The thesis, therefore, explores the relationship between computer science and restoration, starting from its origins up to modern experimental and research applications. It highlights the terminological debate and the objectives of virtual restoration, showing the need for standardisation and scientific reliability of the results. The paper then focuses on two-dimensional and three-dimensional virtual restoration practices, highlighting the differences and similarities between the methodologies employed. Insights into 3D GIS and relational databases are presented, illustrating the fundamental role of these elements in the creation of the platform. Finally, we come to the dissertation on the creation and development phase of the DRes plug-in. This is a tool that, following a structured workflow, makes it possible to carry out all the processing of two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional virtual restoration and, at the same time, to connect these activities with the information contained in the associated relational database. Lastly, the paper reports the results obtained through the use of the platform applied to three case studies: the two-dimensional virtual restoration of the opus sectile flooring in room A8 of the Villa dei Quintili on the Via Appia, the three-dimensional virtual restoration of the entire collection from tomb 643 of Monte Abatone in Cerveteri and, finally, the two- and three-dimensional virtual restoration of the grotesque paintings in the apse of room E of the "Bagno del Cardinale" of the Villa del Colle del Cardinale in Perugia. Through these case studies, representative of different epochs and contexts, the paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the platform as a versatile tool suited to the purposes of the complex field of virtual restoration.
