Abstract

Electronic scholarly editions are actually more than twenty years old, but the related theoretical reflections have only recently acquired an autonomy of their own, in respect to the ones about text encoding; a logical consequence is the highlighting of a number of issues until now neglected, first of all their multi-dimensional complexity. The purpose of this article is to put in a proper perspective, so far not sufficiently considered, the aspects related to the role of technology in the ontological definition of the edition concept , in relation to its epistemological requirements and considering also the existing relationship between the text and book concepts, and their redefinition based on computational tools. Digital textuality, in its different forms, is now pervasive, and not any more limited to a scholarly niche, and even electronic books, intended for a wider audience, are now evolving towards complex information systems, capable of responding to the different needs of users. Compared to the inevitable increase in complexity of electronic books or other electronic publishing systems, lessons learned in the creation of digital critical editions, which are based on dense and multi-level texts, are therefore crucial.
