Breathing in the mud: Resilience and traumas of Porong communities affected by the Lapindo Mudflow Disaster, East Java, Indonesia

Abstract

This study hopes to shed light on the impact of disasters from the Porong communities' points of view whose have to live under the crises of the Lapindo Mudflow Disaster. This disaster affects the most vulnerable groups, with the obvious impact seen in the trauma faced by individuals and communities. However, the destruction of the environment has led to several long-term social changes, in which the impact of disaster is felt in everyday life. This rapid and irreversible change has made life precarious for the most vulnerable. Poor communities are most impacted by their source of livelihood being destroyed. History and heritage are also at risk with spaces considered landmarks of spirituality being destroyed. This is a complex issue that needs an ecological framework, in order to address psychological trauma at the individual level, and a broader interdisciplinary framework in order to address cultural issues. While it is tempting to reduce disaster trauma to an individual problem, this neglects the larger context, which is nested within family, neighborhood, and community. This study address broader social and cultural issues that affect both individuals and communities, includes migration, disruption in place attachment, loneliness, stigma, and other problematic living conditions.
