[The law of the land].

The mental health legislation in England has two essential pillars: The Mental Health Act 2007 and The Capacity Act 2005. The Mental Health Act is the legislation governing the formal detention and care of mentally disordered people in english hospitals. The Mental Capacity Act provides a statutory framework to empower and protect vulnerable people who are not able to make their own decisions. This article reviews certain essential aspects of these laws and the impact they have in daily practice.
